I just installed the latest build of Chromium on my MacBook because I wanted to use some of the new extensions available recently, but when I ran it, it had a blue title bar, like on Windows XP and Linux. I didn’t think too much of it, backed up the Chromium profile folder, and copied over my Chrome profile, and Chromium went back to grey.

After poking around and comparing the two Preference files, I figured out what was causing Chromium to go blue, there was an extension listed in the file, which the theme entry lower down referenced.

I did this using build 34868, and I cannot guarantee this will work for others, it just happened to work for me. If you do it wrong, or it doesn’t work, and it messes up your Chromium profile, I accept no responsibility. Backup the Default folder just in case this happens.

• Close Chromium, then go to ‘~/Library/Application Support/Chromium/Default/’
• Backup the Extensions folder and the Preferences file. If you make a mistake in the Preferences file, it deletes all the Extensions for some reason…
• Open up ‘Preferences’ in TextEdit (or whatever plain text editor you want to use).
• Find where it says ‘”settings”: {‘, it should be after ‘autoupdate’ under ‘extensions’
• Add in the following before ‘”settings”: {‘:

A lot of work for something so simple really… I wonder is there a theme available that’ll do this for you…

My Health

It’s no secret to anyone that knows me, or has even just met me, that I’m not exactly in the best physical shape… To put it bluntly, I’m overweight. Not massively overweight, but enough to make a difference, sometimes making physical tasks a bit harder than they should be. I lost a fair bit of weight after my Leaving Cert, thanks to working in a factory, then Penney’s, so I got some exercise during work, but then I got a job in an internet café. Worse possible job for my health! 12 hour shift, and nothing available to eat and drink but crap from a vending machine. Anyway, I should’ve realised at the time that that was going to be a problem, and done things to keep a somewhat healthy lifestyle, but I didn’t, and eventually ended up back at square one. Then came college, where I feel victim to the typical student diet of take away and simple to cook unhealthy food. So one of my goals is to get into a healthy lifestyle, and lose weight. So, here’s my first request: Can anybody give me a source for simple to cook dinners for someone who would somehow manage to burn Corn Flakes when getting my breakfast and has a pretty fussy taste? (Ok, I’m not really THAT bad at cooking, but you get the idea – it’s far from my strong point.)

My Sleeping Pattern

There’s only one way to describe my sleeping pattern of last year, and that is screwed up. (Well, actually, there’s plenty of ways I could have described, I just decided to go for a less offensive way ) I’d stay up as late as 4am, for absolutely no reason, often completely on my own, with class just 5 hours later, and I’d generally then miss that class. I could’ve done better in class if I got a grip of my sleeping pattern. I guess it’s not really something I can get help with, it’s just a matter of me copping on and going to bed at a decent hour. And in turn, that would help my health to a certain extent.

Time Management

Ok, this has been a major problem all my life. I always leave things to the last minute. Maybe it’s coz I need that sense of panic to get the creative juices flowing, but in fairness, I shouldn’t need that. I should be able to break up work into sections and goals and spread it out over time. Everyone should be able to do that, right? Timetabling work hasn’t really been something I’ve tried before, and I don’t know if I will try that approach, coz there’s times where I just freeze, and end up doing a half-assed job, because I can’t think properly, and does anyone really know what they’re gonna be doing at 8pm the next day in college? I know I wouldn’t. How do you do it? How do you eliminate distractions, and focus on the goal at hand? It seems like it should be so simple, but it’s not, and I’m gonna put up my hand and say I need help with it.

And the rest…

There’s lots of other little things, but they all tie into the above three. Once they improve, the rest should fall into place. All of it seems like common sense, and maybe all I need to do is stop and think about what I’m doing, and what I should be doing. It’s not rocket science, but it ain’t easy either, so I’m opening the floor in the comments to any tips anyone has for putting structure in my life, and getting things done the way they should.

Now to see if I actually get any comments…
On a side note, I should really finish this design. Comments are the one thing I didn’t touch at all yet…

It wasn’t really something I expected to see while looking through Google Reader, but in a way, I’m glad I did. These kind of ads are common these days on TV, but this video, to be shown as part of a 30-minute movie to students in the area about the dangers of texting while driving, has a had a much bigger effect on me than any other video. I’ve seen my mum text and driving before, so as soon as I get a chance I’m showing her this video in the hope that it might stop her from doing it again.

This video should be shown around the world, and thanks to the internet and YouTube, that should hopefully happen…

In a nutshell, this isn’t really a new OS, it’s just Ubuntu with a blue theme and a Jolicloud program, which quite frankly seemed like nothing but a pretty program installer. I was greatly disappointed… This wasn’t the wonder OS I was expecting. I was expecting to have all my social networks integrated into my desktop, one universal place to keep up with friends on Twitter, Facebook and others. But no, the only social network was the Jolicloud one, which is useless, coz then friends without Jolicloud can’t participate. I also expected to be able to launch my applications from the Jolicloud interface, but that was a no go.

Not all was bad though, the Prism based web apps work well, and Jolicloud adds nice high-res icons for each application, so your not stuck with tiny favicons, and the overall look of everything is nice. Boot time was quick. I can’t quite tell if it was quicker than Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 (UNR), but I think it was. The launcher interface from UNR has been tweaked to a solid black, with white borders, and seems to run faster. And My Jolicloud is a Prism app itself, and is quick enough to respond, although freezes up for a second here and there, as Firefox does on a netbook.

Overall, I think Jolicloud is not the OS I’ve been waiting for. Perhaps Moblin will turn out as I want it, or failing that Android will be properly adapted to netbooks. I might track down a build of Android for Atom netbooks (if there is actually any out there), and give it a go soon.
